This morning we booked tickets for Auschwitz. We just missed the bus by 2 minutes so we got a taxi into the city and made it in time. We still would have without the taxi but better to e safe than sorry and for only like $10, who cares. Although the taxi driver was odd. He seemed to have a collection of all the things people have left in his car just chilling on the dashboard.
I won't go into detail of the tour because it was actually horrific to learn what went on. It's one thing to learn in the classroom or to watch on tv what happened but it's another to go there and walk where so many people walked, suffered and died. I will however mention that between 10am and 3pm you need to be with a guide to get into the museum and memorial sites so make sure you book with a reputable company beforehand. We went with "see krakow" and we were shown a 45 minute DVD onboard the bus on the way there about Auschwitz. Also bring food as there is no chance of buying much food and of it's hot bring water and buy some there if needed.
It is difficult to compare this to Dachau because that was a lot smaller than Auschwitz II and had information, rooms and a lot of destroyed buildings. This was more of a memorial site and very little information at Auschwitz I and none at Auschwitz II. This felt more personal and you could still see all the personal belongings to people left behind. It makes you wonder what went through people's minds at the time.
This is also the first time it's hit me that in just over a weeks time I'll be alone traveling around Europe and I hope everything works out well for me.
