Today we headed up to Jungfrau which is a snow capped mountain near where we are staying. When I heard that it was a 2 hour train ride up I thought it was a just a joke, so I asked Danny and he said 3 hours 15 for me…funny. Half way up we needed to change trains and that’s when Danny left us and went back down. As we were going up the mountain, the train stopped at two locations for us to get photos, but the thing is it was absolutely freezing. I thought I’d be fine with a singlet (or vest, for those British fans of mine), long sleeve t-shirt and jumper. I was freezing regardless. Up on the peak I saw Gina with a scarf and I jokingly said is that for me, but she just gave it to me to borrow anyway. Actually later on when I went into the town for a hot chocolate (which was huge, I asked for a large and it was more than twice the size of the regular) and the lady serving me just stopped and said ‘I LOVE your scarf!!!’ and I said thanks but it’s not even mine. Thanks Gina!!!
So when we got off the train we were in a building which was underground but sort of also poked outside the mountain. It was filled with some pointless stuff too though. Like the layout was really confusing, so we just ended up going around in circles pretty much. It’s pretty funny how in the actual building it was a lot colder than the outside. The ice castle was the worst, along with the path from the shops to the outside, it just felt so cold and it was a bit wet… ;)
Outside was amazing, it got a little windy but it was awesome. I found it a bit strange and fascinating that there were birds flying around. We couldn’t get to the true peak of the mountain, they were actually covered by clouds, as you can probably see in the photos. Emma and I ended up going outside at the platform and taking photos but it was so awesome being out there. I remember back when I went on my skiing trip to New Zealand with high school (there’s a plug for you Overnewton) that we were asked to wear sun glasses and sun screen, but some people didn’t listen and ended up getting burnt from the snows reflection and getting tan lines from their sun glasses. It was the same here, you could feel the change in temperature but we only stayed out for a little so unfortunately no one got funny tan lines. Actually some of the guys, from what I was told, stripped down to their undies and ran around in the snow, threw snow balls at old guys at random shit. Suddenly I’m the sane one.
After everyone lost everyone and everyone tried looking for everyone, I found WiFi! It’s the greatest thing ever that a mountain, with the highest train station in Europe, has free public WiFi. No way would have I imagined that it would be possible but it was as hell was and I sure as hell needed free internet. Seeming as the accommodation was charging 5 Franks for 30 minutes or 25 Franks for 24 hours (which is almost as much as what we pay per month) it was a rip off. On the way down we decided to go for a hot chocolate seeming as it only got like 5 Franks anyway and there was free WiFi, it worked out better than going back to the accommodation for their internet for 30 minutes. We used it for something like an hour away.
Afterwards I got a bottle a Plum Schnapps because for 20 Franks it actually seemed a lot cheaper to get that than buying alcohol down at the bar later for the Swissco Disco. But like I said, my card wasn’t working and for some unknown reason it wouldn’t even with the right PIN number. So the lady was getting pissed off with me when I tried it for the second time when my PIN didn’t want to work. Stupid bitch was asking if I pushed the button. NO! I was standing here for a good two minutes touching random shit. What the hell is wrong with people? This confirms my theory that being an idiot is global. So I tried my other card and it worked but the bitch got annoyed I wanted to try my other card.
For the party we ended up pre-drinking, because out of all the places we have been to up to now, Switzerland is the most expensive. Last night I got one drink and a shot for 10 Franks. Keep in mind that Swiss Franks and the Australian Dollar is pretty much the same, we got drinks at other places for 3 Euros. So the rest was a bit of a blur and I hope everyone else’s photos can help me out now…
